MIKE LONG - CHAIRMAN Mike is one of the founder members of the Club which was established in October 2000. He took over as Chairman in May 2004. Mike has been detecting for over 40 years, his first 'machine' being home-made - a broomstick with a square 'coil' - but it worked! He remembers finding many old pennies on Polzeath beach! He has often been heard to say: "Oh, how I wish I had a sophisticated machine then - my finds pouch would have been bulging!" He eventually 'splashed out' and bought a proper detector for £25!! However, his disappointment at finding only mediocre items persuaded him to upgrade to a basic Garret machine and then an early Minelab Sovereign. He still thinks this was one of the best machines produced, however he recognised that technology had moved on and eventually purchased a Minelab Explorer. Mike's ability to detect has more recently become fairly restricted due to knee problems, however he intends to continue so long as he can.
